Google fights back! Say hello to their new AI mode

As we discussed in a recent article. Online search behaviour has changed significantly in recent times with many users shifting towards AI chatbots such as ChatGPT.

This shift has also changed the way users are searching. Less users are performing traditional keyword searches and instead are asking longer, more specific questions in a conversational manner and often with follow-up queries.

This shift to AI search has had a direct impact on many businesses website traffic, as users often get their required information without the need to visit a website.

What is Google AI mode?

Google’s response to this shift is to introduce an AI mode. This is an extension of their traditional search platform and uses their AI platform Gemini to generate responses. It is designed to answer longer, more specific questions in a conversational manner. Just like users experience on ChatGPT.

What impact will it have?

To searchers that Google has lost to ChatGPT, they’ll be hoping this new feature brings them back. What’s exciting though and something we are keeping a very close eye on, is that Google is expected to roll out advertising placements in their AI mode later this year.

This is not currently offered by ChatGPT and represents a great opportunity to showcase your products and services to AI searchers. It could prove to be a valuable source of website traffic and could help recoup the loss from ‘zero-click searches’ that AI has caused in the first place!
