Welcome to the Blandpocalypse

23rd September 2026

Spend less than two minutes scrolling through LinkedIn, and you’re bound to experience a profound sense of digital déjà vu.

It starts innocently enough, but soon you’re knee-deep in buzzwordery and bullsh*t: “Supercharge your workflows,” “Fuel innovation,” “Unlock ecosystem synergies,” and “Drive disruptive transformation.”

Just words. Words that no-one spoke to anyone, ever.

Welcome to the Blandpocalypse. And according to fresh research from the LinkedIn B2B Institute and System1, 75% of B2B brands are actively contributing to this wasteland by failing to produce advertising with the potential to drive long-term growth.

Sameness syndrome

Take a quick ad-safari through B2B feeds, and you will spot them instantly. Endless stock photos of glowing geometric cubes, interchangeable professionals pointing enthusiastically at tablets, and headline copy designed to tell you everything while communicating absolutely nothing.

It’s safe, human-less, practically invisible and completely unmemorable advertising.

But the data tells a completely different story.

The 95:5 rule

Why does this sea of sameness matter? Because of a fundamental truth about B2B marketing, only about 5% of your target audience is in the market to buy at any given moment.

To put it another way, 95% of the people seeing your ads today are not ready to buy. If your entire strategy relies on shouting “buy now” with short-term, lead-gen-heavy performance optimised ads, you miss most of your future market.

When that 95% eventually wants what you’re offering weeks, months, or years down the line, they remember the brands that created a connection, that made them feel something.

Be distinctive but human

Surviving the Blandpocalypse means embracing fresh, interesting, and distinctive ways to communicate your offer. Because distinctiveness works, and it happens to be best pals with memorable.

Effective communication starts with clear, human truths rather than hiding behind dry, technical speak. Get the tone right too, and you’ll position your brand firmly in the mind of your audience.

Never lose sight of this…

Effective B2B advertising relies on balancing short-term lead generation with long-term brand building. Or focusing on ‘future demand’, as James Hurman puts it*.

To be remembered by the 95% when they finally cross the line, we must be distinctive and memorable.

Drop the jargon. Ditch bland. Let’s make advertising interesting again.
